Senate Passes Crooks with Guns Bill

2 Police Chiefs Present for Passage

The Crooks with Guns Bill passed the full Senate on Monday (June 11, 2007) under the watchful eyes of Metro Nashville Police Chief Ronal Serpas and Memphis Police Director Larry A. Godwin.

Senate Bill 1967, sponsored by Senator Mark Norris (R-Collierville), will bring mandatory consecutive sentences for three, six and sometimes 10 years upon violent offenders and repeat offenders.

Crooks with Guns penalties will apply to the possession of a firearm during the attempt or commission of a dangerous felony or employing a firearm during one.  Dangerous felonies are defined and are 12 in number, making them the dirty dozen deeds.

The Crooks with Guns Bill passed 31-0.  Senators Jerry Cooper or Ophelia Ford did not register a concurrent vote.

Votes will be updated online at the Tennessee General Assembly Web site.
